EB SR5 BASSES 

(1987 - Current)

A sample of serials to aid in dating an instrument. It is not a complete data base and may not be accurate. Serials are not necessarily in chronological order.

Note on preamp and pickup:

1) All preamps for the SR5 are 3EQ since its introduction. The 2EQ is not an option.

2) Initially pickups were Alnico. To overcome noise in the single coil mode the pickups began changing to Ceramic from early 1991.This new pickup is recognized by a magnet strip attached to the bottom of all the pole pieces. Pole pieces also have a silver appearance rather than the dull grey Alnico. To improve things further a noise-cancelling dummy coil was added to the bottom of the pickup starting towards the end of 1992. At the same time a new preamp was included to accommodate the new dummy coil. The changes took place over time in that some early 1993 Basses may not have the new dummy coil and its related preamp.

3) From 12 March 2008 all SR5 Basses shipped with Alnico pickups as opposed to Ceramic.

4) From 2018 a new 18 voly 3EQ preamp & Neodymium pickups

The regular Stingrays have the “E” serials up to early 2017 when reaching E99999. The serials were then allocated a “C” prefix (C00001). However, no more orders were taken for the regular Stingrays after the introduction of the Special (light weight) Stingrays c. mid 2018. The Specials were allocated “F” prefixed serials rather than the “C”. Consequently there is a short period of time with the regular Sting Rays sporting a “C” serials. If the regular Stingrays are offered again then it would seem that they will continue with the “C” serials.

Finish "California Sunset". Ash body with Mahogany "Tone Block" and book-matched Maple top. Approx 50% each of quilted and flamed tops. Maple or Rosewood fretboard with or without matching headstock. Pau Ferro for lined and unlined fretless. Dual pickup models wired in parallel with 5 way switching. Single Humbucker models remain 3 way switching but with a new series mode. Alnico magnets for all humbucker pickups except Neodymium magnets for single coil pickups. A new 3 Band EQ pre-amp. Five bolt neck (not 6 as found on the regular SR5). Piezo option is not available. A total of approx 335 made consisting of approx 110 single H, approx 150 with HH and approx 75 with HS pickup configurations.
