A 1976 "Sunburst" with plastic "Radio" control knobs as
opposed to knurled metal knobs.

Above two pics. Very rare version of "Sunburst". Outer edge is Brown
rather than the traditional Black. Examples exist from 1976

and, to a lesser extent, 1977. Serial B001092.

Serial B001013. Originally a "Demonstrator" Bass for Australian market.
"Radio" knobs with original Black pickguard combo rather than White.

1976 with original Fretless Rosewood ("Aussie Mark").

INTRO.

Production began June 1976.

Biggest production year was 1979 with 700 to 1,000 instruments per month. Leo Fender left Music Man at the end of 1979 but his CLF company continued producing Music Man instruments. 1980 marked the turning point. At the start of 1980 approx 450 instruments per month and, by June 1980, less than 40 per month. The last fully built CLF instruments for Music Man were in Sept 1980. (Courtesy Jim Shine).

From this point Charvel/Jackson produced the instruments. Initially some CLF parts were utilized. Duribg this period the neck radius of 7.5 inches was changed to a flatter 11 inch radius.

In the meantime the first production Bass by CLF for Leo Fenders new "G&L" company was 9 July 1980. (Courtesy Jim Shine).

Music Man eventually closed its doors Christmas Eve 1983. Ernie Ball aquired Music Man 3 March 1984.

A NOTE ON THE USE OF ROSEWOOD AND EBONY, SERIAL NUMBER LOCATION, THE USE OF BLACK EPOXY ON PRE-AMPS, BODY CONTOURING & BRIDGES.

Although Rosewood was initially used for fretless Basses, fretted Rosewood was not introduced as an option to Maple necks until late 1979. At the same time fretless Basses changed from Rosewood to Ebony.

Initially the Sting Ray serial number was located on the neck plate. At the end of 1978 (circa Nov-Dec) the serialised neck plate was gradually replaced with a new bridge relocating the serial number between the string saddles and the rear of the bridge. "Music Man" was also displayed on the rear of the bridge and the string-through holes were repositioned. Prior to this the rear of the bridge was blank. From Sept 1978 the non-epoxied preamp gradually replaced the black epoxied preamp. However, it's not unusual to find the black epoxy in early Jan 1979 Basses. Strings are loaded through the body but are top loaded from circa latter part of 1982-early 1983. The body is slab and not contoured.

On the other hand, the Sabre Bass has always had the serial number located on the bridge since its introduction mid 1979. Strings are top loaded. Bodies are contoured and not slab. As with the Sting Ray Bass, although Rosewood was initially used for fretless Basses, fretted Rosewood was not introduced as an option to Maple necks until late 1979. At the same time fretless Basses changed from Rosewood to Ebony. Sabre preamps are non-epoxy.
