Re: Pre-EB Serial Numbers:
During manufacture of Pre-EB instruments, serials were not allocated in strict chronological order but in a broad sense they are generally chronological. Unfortunately, official records do not exist. The serial number information on this site is not exhaustive. It has been provided by instrument owners and/or gleaned from other sources. The lists should give fair indication of the age of an instrument.
Headstock logos, bridges, neck plates and electronics will also give an indication of age of an instrument.
Instruments are normally dated. Dates are located on the neck heel and/or in the neck pocket on the body.
However the neck has to be removed to view them. In very rare cases neither the neck nor body will be dated.
Re: Ernie Ball Serial Numbers:
The lists I have are meant as a "Ready-Reckoner" for a rough idea of date. They are NOT a complete data base. Note that Ernie Ball serials are not necessarily in chronological order.
Ernie Ball has its own data base for their instruments which are made in USA. As of 21 May 2019 the date of an Ernie Ball Music Man instrument (Bass or Guitar) can be obtained by going to the link directly below. Early Ernie Ball Basses using the older Pre-EB "B" prefixed serials are not recorded on this Ernie Ball data base link. However, these older serials are covered in the "Serials EB Sting Ray 4" page (see index above).
