1979 Fretless Sabre.

INTRO.

Pre-production parts inventory for the Sabre was ready by the end of Oct 1978. The first Sabre to be assembled was in Dec 1978 for catalogue pictures. It was given a Sting Ray "B00xxxx" serial on a three bolt neck plate. However, the first production Sabre Basses (total of 5) were completed on Friday 25 May 1979. Another 61 were completed over the last three days of that month. The 1978 parts inventory was used. (Courtesy Jim Shine).

It is thought that the Sabre was launched at the NANM Show in Spring 1979.

The Sabre Basses have always had their serial numbers located on a top loaded bridg. Bodies are contoured and never slab. Rosewood was initially used for fretless only. Fretted Rosewood was offered as an option to Maple from late 1979 and, at the same time, Ebony replaced Rosewood for fretless. The 2EQ preamp boards are non-epoxy. Two variations of the preamp were used with their boards marked either "B4" or "B5". Initially, toggle switches were used on the control plate but were replaced with a single lever switch from late 1982 onwards. In conjunction with the lever switch, a 2EQ Sting Ray preamp board (marked "B3") replaced the two origial preamp board variations.
